BOX 459 Director
Florence CO 81226
Re: Southfield Mine, C1981-014, Pond Inspection Reports-First Quarter 2010 and Fourth Quarter 2010
Dear Mr. Patterson:
On February 4, 2011 the Division received First and Fourth Quarter 2010 Sediment Pond Reports for the Southfield
Mine. Four sediment ponds have been retained in the Southfield permit.
First quarter 2010 pond inspections were conducted March 25, 2010. Of the four ponds three of the four were dry
during the first quarter 2010 inspection. Pond 5 had a small pool of water near the riser, but was not discharging nor
did it show signs of having recently discharged. No maintenance items were identified during the first quarter 2010
sediment pond inspection.
All four ponds were dry during the fourth quarter 2010 inspection. The fourth quarter inspections were conducted on
December 23, 2010. The inspection was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2010. The reports did not identify any
problems with any of the four ponds during fourth quarter 2010.
The Division was on site on January 28, 2011 and observed trash dumped in Pond #1 at the Load out. The trash,
fencing and small kitchen appliances, was not impeding the discharge outlet, but the material will still need to be
removed (Rule 4.05.9(11)).
The fourth quarter 2010 inspection reports are in compliance with Rule 4.05.9(17) and 4.05.9(14). First quarter 2010
inspection report was submitted to the Division ten (10) months after the inspection was completed. Reports need to
be maintained at the mine records location and submitted to the Division on a quarterly basis.
Please call me should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Janet V86-3567 inns
Envirental Protection Specialist II
(303) ext. 8107
C:jhb/C81014/Reports/I' and 4`h Q 2010 sediment pond review.doc
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
