November 8,2010 C-1981-017/Coal Basin Mines SGR
significant slide of altered shale material has closed the road at this location. Road F, and Mine 3,are only
accessible by foot or horseback from this point. This failure appears to be a gravitational release of the weathered
shale, versus a slump block triggered by the summer rainstorm. No evidence of spring or seep flow from the toe
of the slide was observed. Road F was walked for another half mile or so. The ephemeral stream crossing located
before the first switchback has down cut, also limiting travel.
Road G,which accesses Mine 5 from the Road E/F/G intersection, was inspected from the intersection to the
Oil Well Creek low water crossing. The road was functioning as designed for this distance. Oil Well Creek has
down cut through the low water crossing, but not on the scale observed at other areas. Snow cover and channel
scour prevented further access toward Mine 5.
SUPPORT FACILITIES -Rule 4.04:
Mines 1 and 2 were observed. The former access routes to the Mine 2 bath house and to the Mine 2
beltline entry were walked. These areas are functioning as designed.
The former Mine 1 loadout bench located immediately down slope and east of the former mine entries,
experienced significant runoff, presumably as a result of the rain event that so significantly scoured Dutch Creek.
It is apparent that a tremendous amount of surface water runoff transited the area, and then cascaded down the
Mine 1 outslope. This event caused significant erosion to the outslope. Two large gullies have developed at the
outslope. The tree bands planted in the late 1990's and early 2000's are visible from the Mine 1 bench. Some
amount of remedial work may be accomplished at the Mine 1 bench in the early summer of 2011. Any work
undertaken at this location would be geared toward dispersing overland flows to minimize the potential for erosive
flows from flowing over the outslope. It should be noted however, that similar work has been previously
attempted on a number of occasions.
SEALING OF DRILLED HOLES AND UNDERGROUND OPENINGS—Rule 4.07
RECLAMATION PLAN COMPLIANCE—Rule 4.13
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
OTHER(SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 4 of 7
