6.4.4 Exhibit D
Mining Plan
Rock Gulch Gravel Pit began production in 1980 within an existing disturbance
of a gravel pit. The target deposit of gravel and cobble lies within gravelly alluvial
land and rough broken land, as described by the Soil Conservation Survey. The
primary commodity is gravel. Incidental material is sand. The average deposit
thickness is 35 feet. This will be a dry mining operation.
The proposed mine will operate five days a week for approximately 40 weeks
each year from sunrise to sunset. Mining and processing will be performed by a
licensed contractor.
The total permit area is 26.1 acres. The site is divided into two sections by
Chaffee County Rd 107. Gravel Pit Area 1, approximately 21.9 acres, will continue to
be the active mining area. Gravel Pit Area 2, composed of 4.2 acres, will be mined
after Pit Area 1 is mined out. The expected life of the mine is approximately 20
years, depending on economic demand, with 18 years in Pit Area 1 and two years in
Pit Area 2.
The soils and vegetation descriptions provided by Chaffee Soil Conservation
District remain unchanged from the original approved 110 permit application.
Minimal plant growth medium is on site but all will be reserved and used for
reclamation. Overburden is approximately zero to six inches deep. Plant growth
medium, overburden and some fines will be used during reclamation.
Loaders and bulldozers will continue mining progressing from the north side
to the south side across the deposit. Mining will maintain perimeter 3H:1V slopes.
When necessary, the processing area, crushing and screening, will be located inside
the disturbance.
If necessary, stormwater perimeter diversions will be constructed of
overburden and reject material as required by Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment's Water Quality Control Division. All diversionary structures will be
temporary and will be removed during reclamation. Since the mine is a pit, surface
water will naturally collect in the mine area. The pit floor grade has established a
pooling area for surface water to the north of the entrance road.
Revised January 5, 2011
