Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 231
•
6.1.58 Site 5MF6116 (RR -6)
Site Tyne Cairn
Legal Location Section 23, T4N, R94W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensions 2 x 1 m
Site Description Site 5MF6116 is a collapsed cairn of unknown origin located on a low
northwest - facing hill on the west side of a major northeast- trending ridge east of Morgan Gulch
(Figure 6.139). The low hill has an elevation of 6,911 ft (2,106 m), and the cairn is in a midslope
position between the crest of the ridge to the east and Morgan Gulch to the west (Figure 6.140).
Exposures of sandstone bedrock are common throughout the area. On -site sediment consists of
residual sandy clay and bedrock. The vegetation community consists of scattered sagebrush,
rabbitbrush, sparse low bunchgrasses, and few forbs. Impacts to the site include erosion, livestock
( trampling, and neglect.
The cairn (Feature 1) consists of approximately 50 unshaped tabular sandstone slabs readily available
in the immediate area (Figure 6.141). It has collapsed uphill and covers an area roughly 1 x 2 m in
size. The cairn bad an estimated original height of 4 ft (1 m). The basal remnants still in place are
not well sodded in, which suggests that it does not have great time depth and may be historic in age.
Although its location does not coincide with section lines or corners, the cairn appears similar to
other historic cairns in the project area that do reflect land locations. These considerations form the
basis for recording the cairn as a historic construct, although this assessment is conjecture. No
artifacts were recorded in association with the cairn.
•
The site was not tested owing to the nature of the site and its location on residual sediment and
bedrock.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
