The terrace is at the
mouth of Collom Gulch. It is shielded to the west by the sloping north end of a broad ridge and by
a hogback across the gulch to the east (Figure 6.80). The mouth of the gulch opens onto Axial Basin
to the northeast. On -site sediment consists of silty clay with a large volume of gravel and eroding
sandstone detritus. The vegetation community consists of dense big sagebrush in the east half of the
site along the terrace margin. Other plants include various low grasses and forbs and prickly pear
cactus. The site has been impacted by construction of an improved road through the western part
of the site, erosion, and livestock trampling.
The prehistoric component consists of a sparse open camp. Associated artifacts consist of one
preform fragment, two flake tools, 10 flakes, one mano, and one heat - altered rock fragment. The
preform fragment consists of the proximal portion that measures 1.8P x 1.9P x 0.5 cm and is made
of opaque chest. Both flake tools are utilized retouched flakes. The first flake tool consists of the
distal portion of a semitranslucent chert secondary flake that measures 33P x 3.1 x 0.7 cm. The
distal and lateral margins exhibit steep retouched and utilized edge angles. The second flake tool
is the distal portion of an opaque chert tertiary flake that measures UP x 2.8 x 0.9 cm. The distal
and lateral margins exhibit steep retouch and utilization.
The debitage assemblage consists of 10 flakes, five of which are tertiary flakes. The remainder
consists of three pieces of shatter, one primary flake, and one secondary flake. Opaque chert is the
dominant material type with six flakes (three tertiary, one secondary, one primary, and three pieces
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
