• Improvement opportunities are identified in the following areas;
• Specifications exist for the minimum and maximum length of ply -by -ply (sub
sectional) samples to be taken in coal and non -coal strata, however ply sampling is
not always undertaken consistently. TS recommends that consistent ply -by -ply
sampling be implemented.
• Procedures for the handling, sampling, labelling, transport and storage of core to
preserve the integrity of the sample have been established. The current Collom
exploration cores are stored for up to 10 days before being sent to the laboratory in
Denver. There are apparent issues surrounding the measurement of the moisture
content of Collom coal and therefore the determination of ASG and Specific Energy.
It is essential that every means be taken to preserve each core sample in an "as
recovered" condition. TS recommends that CCC investigate ways to reduce the time
lapse between core recovery and delivery to the laboratory.
Distribution of drill holes is not clearly based on a regular grid or a statistically
determined pattern. TS recommends that the statistics of coal thickness and key
coal quality data at Colowyo be investigated to improve understanding of spatial
variability and confirm the appropriate drill hole spacing.
2.3.2 Coal quality - Moisture
• As a significant diluent, it is essential that the moisture content and its various fors be well
understood in order to accurately estimate both the quantity of coal available and the
effective quality of the coal (especially on an "as received' basis).
•
TS
Evidence from historical and recent CCC analytical programs indicates that there is no
relationship between Air Dried Moisture (M and Equilibrium Moisture (M, Consequently,
TS recommends using the Dry Basis as the common basis for comparing recent test work
with historical data.
A comparison of historical data of the total moisture content of CCC coal is shown in Figure
2 -1 below. The production data are generally derived within one day of being sampled.
These results are used for quality control and relate to currently mined seams only. The data
for KEC and others refer to all seams analysed, not Just those currently being mined.
ccc c....airy.......
c•anw. of Tm.i M.Icmn m.ma,no„ q c,n,•.,,r
Vs1 Maw
,015
G+u M,s 1,69
XEC MCS, 1591
Mw Pree pNMmn IOO
RI
