Appendix F
•
DRILLING PROTOCOL
GEOLOGICAL /GEOTECHNICAL DRILL AND CORE HOLES
I. Drillers Daily Record
The i:ollowing MUST be recorded on the KEC supplied daily driller's record:
a.
Hole number(s)
b.
Date
c.
Depth and flow (if possible) of any water zones encountered during drilling of
any hole.
d.
Depth of any unusual drilling or geologic conditions, e.g. burn, hard or soft
zones, voids, high pressures, etc. encountered in the hole.
e.
All activities performed during time on location.
L
Daily footages drilled, e.g., cored, rotary, reamed
g.
Drilling and coring bits, e.g., size, type, new or used and footage drilled.
h.
All materials and supplies used per workday per hole. List separately the
supplies provided by Colowyo and those supplied by drilling contractor. State
what supplies were used for. Hole abandonment materials and quantities are
very important and must be tracked accurately.
i.
Fill out a separate drillers log for each hole if two or more holes are worked on
during one workday.
• j.
Safety topics must be discussed and documented every workday. List the time
of day and the personnel that attended in the space provided.
k.
Drillers Daily Log will be completed for each day and presented to the
geologist during the next workday for approval.
II. Procedures for plugging drill or core holes:
All drill and core holes must be plugged before leaving a drill site (unless used as a
monitoring well or piezometer).
For areas outside the West Pit:
When the drill or core hole is ready to be plugged, trip in to approximately 100 feet
from total depth. Mix enough plug gel, using approximately I sack plug gel to 100
gallons water, to fill 200 to 300 feet of drill /core hole and pump down the drill
string. Trip out 200 to 300 feet of drill pipe and mix and pump the plug gel again.
Continue the tripping/mixing and pumping routine until the plug gel reaches to
within 5 to 10 feet of surface. If the plug gel does not reach the surface after
pumping two to three calculated hole volumes, trip out the drill string and fill the
hole with 3/8" bentonite chips to within three to five feet of the ground surface. Fill
the remaining three to five feet with concrete or portland cement and submerge a
small piece of scrap steel into the cement so the hole can be relocated with a metal
detector. Place a wooden lathe in the ground with the hole ID number written on it.
Indicate on the lathe if the hole was a Pilot,, Spot Core or Continuous Core. Record
• in detail the plugging procedure and materials used on the Daily Driller Form.
NAPROJECTS\ACTIVE PROJECTS 1158520037 RioTinto CollomPermit \Draft Pennit Text Tables MapPDFs \Exhibits \Exhibit 6 Item 7 - Geology Pre -
Feasibility Report\Appendices \Appendix F - Protocols \Drilling Protocol2.doc
Page ] of]
2/23/2005-
