100 Considerations for feasibility and permitting
l
increased inflow. If the burn zones are in connection with the valley fill groundwater in
the major stream valleys, they may provide a pathway for valley fill groundwater flow into
the pit. During the 2005 drilling program, the following activities are recommended:
• Identify holes that will intersect the burn zone.
• Collect hydrologic data during drilling in these holes including water levels
and water production rates.
• Conduct flow meter logging using the EM flow meter (if feasible based on
hole conditions).
• Install standpipe piezometers in several holes to determine water levels
conditions in the burn zones and to allow hydraulic testing.
• Conduct single -hole hydraulic tests in the burn zone.
• Determine areas of the proposed pit that may intersect burn zones and
evaluate whether additional dewatering measures are needed.
8.1.2 Hydrogeological conditions in areas outside of the Collom footprint
The pre - feasibility study focused on the hydrogeology in the Collom footprint area.
However, it is our understanding that some coal deposits outside of this footprint may be
C considered as targets for mining. As these areas are explored with drillholes, we
recommend that piezometers be installed on an opportunistic basis to start collecting
hydrogeological information that could be relevant to mining. We suggest using
standpipe piezometers since they will allow hydraulic testing to be conducted in the hole.
If specific areas of interest are encountered during explorations drilling, such as areas of
geologic structures or high inflow, then the EM flow meter logging should be considered.
This will provide scoping -level permeability data to be obtained at relatively low cost.
8.1.3 Refine the mine dewatering /slope depressurization system design
The pre - feasibility level dewatering design is based on the preliminary mine plans. As
the mine plan is changed during feasibility, changes to the dewatering system may be
required to refine the system and optimize its performance and cost. It is important that
the feasibility level dewatering system be tailored to the specific mine plan and pit
slopes.
A regional -scale groundwater model is being developed of the Collom study area. This
model will be used to evaluate potential hydrologic impacts during mining and closure. It
can also be used as a tool to evaluate the feasibility level dewatering /depressurization
program and to optimize the system design.
•
2572 -R2 Colowyo Coal Company
Water Management Consultants
