Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 41
r
specific information cannot be ascertained due to fragmentary condition, general animal size
taxa will be employed. The animal size taxa classification scheme will employ a two - tiered
system. At the more specific level, it will involve classification to specific animal size
categories - -for example, pronghorn -sized animal or rabbit -sized animal. At the more general
level, it will involve classification using a set of five general animal size range taxa or using
combinations or ranges of those taxa. The five basic animal size taxa are summarized below.
It should be noted that these categories subsume bone from birds, amphibians, reptiles, etc., that
fall into the same body size ranges as mammal, where those specimens are not identifiable as
nonmammal.
• Rodent -sized mammals Animals smaller than and including kangaroo rats in
size, including mice, voles, and packrats.
• Very small mammals Animals smaller than and including cottontails, including
prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and pocket gophers, as well as animals falling into
the rodent -sized mammal category.
• Small mammals Animals larger than cottontails and smaller than and including
coyotes, jackrabbits, marmots, bobcats, badgers, beaver, raccoons, and smaller
domestic dogs.
• Medium -sized mammals Animals larger than coyotes and smaller than and
including mule deer, including pronghorn, mountain sheep, wolves, panthers,
mountain goats, and larger domestic dogs.
• Large mammals Animals larger than mule deer, including bison, elk, moose, and
horses.
Elements are identified based on gross morphological attributes. Those elements not readily
identifiable are compared to similar specimens within the UWCOC. Additional comparisons
will allow for the assignation of side (right, left, axial, unknown, etc.) and portion (proximal,
distal, medial, unknown, etc.) to the identified element.
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
i"
