Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 34 <br />Methods and formats used in the laboratory analysis of the remains from the sites are described <br />below by analysis type. Standard laboratory procedures will be followed. The major database <br />for the project (i.e., curation files, debitage analysis files, bone analysis files) will be entered in <br />a Microsoft Access based analysis program. <br />5.3.1 Flaked Stone Artifact Analysis <br />Flaked stone tools, cores, tested cobbles /pebbles, and debitage will be classified as flaked stone <br />artifacts. Flaked stone artifacts that have been deliberately flaked to create a tool or that exhibit <br />evidence (use retouch, usewear) indicative of utilization will be classified as flaked stone tools. <br />Cores and tested cobbles /pebbles are defined as pieces of raw material from which flakes have <br />been detached for use as tools or as blanks for the manufacture of tools. All other flaked stone <br />artifacts will be classified as debitage. Debitage includes all unutilized flakes, flake fragments, <br />and angular debris (shatter) resulting from lithic reduction. The flaked stone tool and debitage <br />analysis categories to be used during these projects are described separately below. <br />0 <br />Flaked Stone'Cool Anal <br />Flaked stone tools will be classified into technological /morphological categories according to <br />the type and relative amount of reduction they have undergone. Three distinct basic reduction <br />sequences resulting in different idealized end - products are distinguished. The first sequence <br />involves the reduction of flakes, pebbles, cobbles, and cores into bifacial implements. The <br />second sequence involves the removal of flakes from cores, cobbles, and pebbles for use as tools <br />with or without edge retouch. The third sequence involves the limited modification (flaking) <br />of cobbles and pebbles for use as tools. The three sequences are not entirely distinct -- products <br />from one sequence may have been subsequently used in another sequence.
