Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 29
6 4.4 SITE 51VIF6098
4.4.1 Phase I Testing
To test the site, three backhoe trenches (Trenches A, B, and C), 20 auger tests, and three 1 x 1 -m
test units are proposed. The trenches will reveal, in profile, the surface that the eroding cultural
material is originating from and will permit evaluation of these deposits. Trenches A and B will
be located on the western bank of Collom Creek, and Trench C will be on the eastern bank of
Collom Creek. Trench A will be T- shaped, with a trench 20 in long and 4 in deep running
perpendicular to Collom Creek and another trench 10 m long and 4 m deep parallel to Collom
Creek at the western end of the 20 -m trench. Trench B will be 20 m long and 4 in deep running
perpendicular to Collom Creek in the southwest portion of the site. Trench C will be 20 in long
and 4 m deep trending through the densest artifact scatter at the site on the eastern bank
running perpendicular to Collom Creek. Once the trenches are dug, the wall will be evaluated
for evidence of buried cultural horizons. The 20 auger tests will be placed on portions of
Collom Creek near Feature 1, as well as around the trenches. The three test units will be placed
where the auger testing and trenches indicate the highest potential for buried cultural deposits.
4.4.2 Phase I1 Data Recovery
Based on the results of the Phase I testing, up to an additional 40 m of excavation may be
warranted. This data recovery will follow the methods detailed in Section 5.2 below.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
