380 Class 111 Inventory, Colowyo Collom Mine Project
(0 NRHP EligibiliiyRecommendation and Project Effect Site 5MF4011 was recommended by
MAC as needing more data during the original recording to determine its NRHP eligibility status,
and the Colorado OAHP officially agreed with that assessment. However, the current inventory
evaluation of the site recommends that it is not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. The portion of
the site considered to possess aeolian deposition during the previous recording was determined to
be only 10 -20 cm thick, with mixed colluvial gravels. An animal burrow in this area revealed coal
dirt about 10 cm below the surface, indicating that there is little if any potential for buried cultural
deposits within this area of the site. Overall; the site lacks a significant density and diversity of
artifacts in the assemblage, there are no extant dateable features, and the diagnostic artifacts on the
site have been collected. The site has no further potential to answer research questions concerning
toolstone procurement and lithic reduction strategies or subsistence and settlement patterns or to
provide significant information that would further the understanding of the prehistory of the region.
The site currently lies outside of the revised project boundary and will not be affected by the
C undertaking. In the future, if the site occurs within an expanded project boundary, there will be no
effect proposed t from the ro d ro'ect because the site is recommended as not eligible for the NRHP.
project
Cultural resource clearance is recommended, with no further work.
6.2.39 Site 5MF5298
•
Site Type Historic homestead
Legal Locat ion: Section 17, T4N, R93 W
Landowner Private
Site Dimension 197 x 174 ft
Site Description Site 5MF5298 is located within the northeastern portion of the Colowyo Collom
Mine project area and was recorded in May 2003 by MAC for Ocean Energy Inc.'s Juniper 17 -1 well
pad project. It was described as an abandoned homestead residence located on a broad valley floor
at the south end of Axial Basin at an elevation of 6,520 ft (1,987 m) (Figures 6.231- 6.232).
