Class X Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 327
•
C
•
6.2.17 Site 5MF1652
Site Tyne Open camp
Legal Location Section 21, T4N, R93W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensions 204 x 153 m
Site Description Site 5MF1652 was originally recorded in July of 1983 by TRC Mariah as part of
the Class III Inventory for the Danforth Hills Project. It was described as a prehistoric open camp
with two features and an extensive surface artifact scatter located at 6,440 ft (1,963 m) on the spine
of a north/south- trending interfluvial ridge that separates Taylor Creek to the east from Jubb Creek
to the west (Figures 6.201- 6.202). The slope at the site fell away from the ridge to the southwest,
northwest, and east at 5 and increased to 20 beyond the site. The site aspect was given as a
complete 360 view of the surrounding region that included views of both floodplains. Site
sediments consisted of an aeolian sandsheet of a yellow tan medium- grained sandy loam with a
moderate density (50 %) of subrounded chert pebbles and sandstone cobbles. Vegetation at the site
consisted of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, needle - and - thread grass; bunchgrass, and various forbs. Total
vegetation ground cover was 70 %. Disturbances included animal grazing and erosion, and the
southeastern portion of the site had been impacted by the construction of Highway 51.
The features consisted of Feature 1, a gray stain containing heat - altered sandstone and quartzite that
measured 1.3 in x 80 cm, and Feature 2, a circular gray to black stain that was 70 cm in diameter.
Four transects radiating from the site datum were used to collect a sample of artifacts found on the
ground surface.. The collection transects yielded 39 pieces of debitage. All tools discovered during
the original recording were collected including two scrapers and one mano. The Highway 51 road
cut had impacted the site and revealed a possible buried cultural cortrponent at 10 to 15 cm below
ground surface.
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
