Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project
Landowner Private
Site Dimensio 108 x 39 m
335
Site Description Site 5MF1655 lies within the north - central portion of the current Colowyo
Collom Mine project. It was recorded in 1983 by TRC Mariah for the Utah International Inc.
Danforth Hills project. The site consisted of a diffuse open camp located on a northwest- facing
bench overlooking Little Collom Gulch at an elevation of 6,900 ft (2,103 m) (Figure 6.206). On -site
sediment consisted of shallow sandy loam overlying bedrock. Numerous sandstone outcrops occured
in the general area. The dense vegetation community (approximately 75% ground cover) consisted
of big sagebrush, serviceberry, scrub oak, wheatgrass and cheatgrass, and various forbs. The site had
been heavily impacted by erosion. The artifact assemblage consisted of one biface fragment, one
flake tool, four flakes, one mano, and two metate fragments. All of the artifacts were collected.
Four auger tests were excavated with negative results. The shallow sediment was determined to have
( a maximum depth of only 12 cm.
Twelve previously unrecorded artifacts were identified during the current inventory that consist of
one sandstone mano and 11 flakes. The nearly complete mano is 13 AP x 7.2 x 3.2 cm and exhibits
light grinding on one face and moderate grinding on the obverse face (Figure 6.207). One end is
battered. No pecking or shaping was noted. The 11 flakes are all tertiary flakes consisting of four
white opaque chert, two semitranslucent chert, and five various chert flakes. None of these artifacts
were collected.
NRHP Eligibility Recommendation and Project Effect Site 5MF 1655 was recommended as not
eligible for listing on the NRHP, and the Colorado OAHP database lists the site as not eligible -field
evaluation. The current evaluation concurs that Site 5MF1655 is not eligible for listing on the
NRHP when evaluated under Criterion D. The site lacks dateable cultural features and temporally
diagnostic artifacts. The artifact assemblage (including the collected 1983 artifacts) is limited in
density and limited in diversity, and the majority of artifacts were collected during the initial
recording. Based on auger tests (1983) and recent visual surface examination, the site has no
•
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
