Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 325
6.2.16 Site 5MF1611
Site Type Historic rock pile
Legal Locatio Section 36, T4N, R94W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensions 11 x 8 ft
Site Descriptio Site 5MF1611 is located within the west - central portion of the Colowyo Collom
Mine project area. It was recorded October 1982 by Gordon and Kranzush for the Danforth Hills
coal drilling project. The site was recorded as a possible grave located in a clearing near a stand of
oakbrush on a broad north- sloping ridge top (Figure 6.200). It was described as somewhat larger
(11 x 8 x 5 ft m) than Site 5MF1610. No soil or vegetation descriptions are provided on the site
form.
C The current inventory noted that the site lies between Little Collom Gulch to the west and the head
of an ephemeral tributary to the east at 7,420 ft (2,262 m). The soils are a thin residual brown sandy
clay loam with sandstone gravels. Vegetation cover is approximately 75% and consists primarily
of medium to big sagebrush surrounding the feature, with sparse mid -level crested grasses and
occasional prickly pear cactus. A stand of Gambel oak occurs adjacent to the site area. The rock pile
consists of tabular sandstone slabs and small boulders of various sizes and resembles the shape of
a grave, although less so than Site 5MF1610; there is more earth mixed in with the rocks than at
Site 5MF1610.
The MTP and Historical Indices for T4N, R94W, and the BLM website indicate that Lester W. Cox
•
received a Homestead Entry Patent (HE No.1098428) on August 12, 1938, for 237.9 acres in
Section 3 6. The patent was not cancelled or relinquished and was filed (044760) at the General Land
Office in Denver. This places the time frame of initial occupation during the late Depression era.
Cox held the property until 1944, since then the land changed ownership three times. Utah
International Inc. owned the land by 1983. Sites 5MF960 and 5MF932 also occur on this property.
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
