t
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Water Management Consultants, Inc. (WMC) has prepared this report for Colowyo Coal
Company, a division of Kennecott Energy Company (KEC), in support of a pre - feasibility
study for the proposed Collom Mine. The proposed Collom Mine is located
approximately four miles west of KEC's Colowyo Mine in northwest Colorado, midway
between the cities of Craig and Meeker.
This report summarizes the project -wide groundwater and surface water baseline
conditions for the proposed Collom Mine. It also addresses key hydrologic issues
associated with project development including mine dewatering, slope depressurization,
and mine water management. Data collection activities related to the baseline
hydrologic characterization were conducted according to a Work Plan prepared for the
Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG). A detailed Sampling and Analysis
Plan (SAP) was also prepared for the project that described both baseline
characterization activities and investigations conducted for the development of the pre -
feasibility level dewatering /depressurization program.
Works performed to meet the objectives of the Work Plan included:
• evaluation of geologic borings;
review of previous investigations;
installation and sampling of 13 bedrock and 5 valley fill monitoring wells;
short-term aquifer tests at 33 locations;
water level measurements;
• installation of a pilot dewatering well and piezometer network;
• a 35 -day test of the pilot dewatering well;
surface water and groundwater sampling;
a spring /seep survey and sampling;
• development of a conceptual hydrogeologic model;
• development of a pre - feasibility level dewatering /depressurization design
for two mine plans;
2572 -R2 Colowyo Coal Company
Water Management Consultants
