38 Surface water
Studies required to support the determination of the presence (or absence) of an AVF
include [Section 2.06.8(3)(b)]:
• Mapping of unconsolidated streamlaid deposits holding streams including
but not limited to:
- geologic maps,
- maps of streams,
- delineation of surface watersheds and direction of shallow
groundwater flow,
- topography showing local and regional terrace levels, flood plains,
stream channels, and surface drainage patterns.
• Mapping of all lands that are or were flood irrigated, showing:
- diversion structures, ditches, dams and reservoirs;
- irrigated lands; and
- topography of those lands.
• Mapping of all lands subject to agricultural activities, showing:
- different types of agricultural lands; and
- measurements of vegetation in terms of productivity and type.
• Documentation of areas not sub irrigated.
• Documentation that areas are or are not flood irrigable.
• Analysis of a series of aerial photographs.
The primary focus of this pre - feasibility evaluation of the AVF information was to
determine if there is sufficient information presently available to allow the CDMG to
make a finding with regard to AVFs. This review also identifies briefly what studies will
likely be required should an AVF be identified.
4.8.2 Summary of existing AVF studies
Previous studies performed in the general vicinity of the proposed Collom Pit include:
• Danforth Hills Project Alluvial Valley Floor Preliminary Identification and
Evaluation, Dames & Moore, July 1980.
• Reconnaissance Maps to Assist in Identifying Alluvial Valley Floors:
West- central and Northwestern Colorado, U.S. Office of Surface Mining
Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), June 1985.
2572 -R2 Colowyo Coal Company
Water Management Consultants
