L J DEVELOPMENT, INC.
256 N. MERRILL DRIVE
PUEBLO WEST, CO 81007
PHONE; 719-240-9424 FAX: 719-583-0583
e-mail: J12&@?incasys.com
November 29, 2010
Berhan Keffelew
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: M-1977-317 Cedar Wood Clay Mine, Conversion Application Adequacy.
Dear Mr. Keffelew:
The applicant will address your concerns in the order presented. Your concern will be followed by the
applicant's answer and clarification.
The Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety has reviewed your conversion application for the Cedar
Wood clay mine, Permit # M-1977-317, from the current 110 permit covering 9.9 acres to a Phased 112
permit covering 93.25 acres, The conversion application proposes to add 83.35 acres to the permit. The
Division has the following adequacy comments. None of the maps submitted with the proposed
conversion application clearly show a well delineated permit boundary, with the appropriate legends.
Please provide new maps showing a clearly delineated permit boundary with legends. Even though the
outline of the permit boundary can be identified from the submitted maps, it would help the reviewer,
if the maps clearly show the delineated permit boundary with an appropriate legend. Please provide
new maps as requested.
The applicant has revised the map as suggested by the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety. The maps have legends showing the pertinent information that the map user will find
as an adjutant to analyzing the data shown on the maps. The permit boundaries are shown with a
sufficient line for ease in identifying the delineation.
6.4.4 Exhibit "D" Mining Plan
1. The operator plans to mine the 93.25 acres in three phases. Phase I will cover 46 acres, Phase II
will cover 20.25 acres and Phase III will cover 27 acres. The maximum depth of mining is going
to be 25-30 feet of the clay seam, 5-10 feet of the sandstone cap rock and 5 to 10 feet of the
clay seam. Some blasting is proposed, that will be conducted by a licensed professional. A high
wall will be part of the mining operation and the operator plans to minimize the overall height
and the lineal feet of all high wall.
