PERMIT #: M-1977-410
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: MAC
INSPECTION DATE: November 18, 2010
OBSERVATIONS
The inspection was conducted by Michael Cunningham of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division). Tom Hendricks of Calais Resources Colorado, Inc. and Bruce Humphries of Regulatory Permits Management,
Inc. were also present for the inspection. The Cross Gold Mine is located 5 miles west of Nederland, CO. The site is
permitted for 2 acres and the post-mining land use is residential. The weather was sunny and there was between 6" - 12"
of snow on the ground.
Availability Of Records:
The Operator indicated the Cross Gold Mine has been issued an APEN permit and has an FEL permit with the ATF. A
review of the permit file found the Division does not have copies of these permits. The Division requests the Operator
submit copies of these permits for the record.
Financial Warranty:
The Division currently holds a financial warranty in the amount of $15,400 which is sufficient to complete reclamation at
the site.
Gen. Compliance With Mine Plan:
Currently there is no mining taking place at the Cross Gold Mine. The mine site contains the following structures:
1) A mobile trailer which is utilized as an office space.
2) A storage warehouse which contains core samples and a compressor.
3) An equipment shop which was undergoing internal repairs at the time of the inspection. The shop contained drill
equipment, mine related PPE, a shower area, and barrels of lime used in the water treatment process. The adit can be
accessed through the equipment shop, a locking door controls access to the adit. There is also an external entrance to the
adit, which was controlled by a set of aluminum doors which have been sealed.
4) A cabin used as a residence and a caretakers quarters which is not currently being used.
The Division approved Technical Revision - 04 on July 21, 1999, which revised the Reclamation Plan to allow all
buildings to remain onsite after the completion of reclamation. The Operator has made repairs to the snow shed during the
past year. Wood timbers within the snow shed were replaced with Douglas Fir 6" x 6" and 8" x 8" posts.
Support Facilities On-site:
The water treatment system operates year round and was functioning properly during the inspection. The water treatment
system consists of two lined ponds, upper and lower. Water flows into the upper pond through a pipe which collects
gravity flow from the tunnel level of the mine workings; water enters the mine as snow melt/surface runoff. The upper
pond drains into the lower pond, which discharges into an elevated pipe and into Coon Track Creek. The average
discharge rate is 19 gpm. The water is treated with lime to control pH levels. The Operator was treating water as it
discharged from the lower pond; however, this method was not effective in controlling the pH level of the water. The
Operator now treats the water at the upper pond by adding powdered lime; this method has proven to be successful in
controlling pH levels. During the inspection, the Operator provided the Division with a copy of the 2010 3rd Quarter
Water Quality Report, which is submitted to the CDPHE as a requirement of the Operator's NPDES Permit. During the
past year, the Operator performed concrete and dike work on the lower pond dam. The improvements to the dam and the
freeboard of the two ponds was not inspected due to snow cover.
Signs and Markers:
The permit sign was posted at the entrance to the site as required by Rule 3.1.12.
This concluded the inspection.
