The species inventory from these investigations is presented in Table 2.8-1. The.
results are only qualitative, as describing population. dynamics of [he species
collected was not a goal. The taxonomic level to identify each specimen was
based on the level required to substantiate lentic or lotic habitat preference.
This usually required Family, Genus and species. Habitat requirements for each
species are also denoted in Table 2.8-1.
As the results in Table 2.8-1 and Map M44 indicate, there are no "perennial"
streams located within the proposed mine plan area requiring protection and buf-
fer zones. This was determined by [he absence of an assemblage of two (2) or
more species of arthropods or molluscan animals dependent upon flowing water
(i.e. obligate rheophiles) that are longer than 2 millimeters in length at some
stage in their life cycle spent in flowing water. Only two (2) obligate rheo-
philes (Mariah, 1980) were collected and identified within or adjacent to the
proposed mine plan area. These included Simulium sp. of [he blackfly family (Si-
muliidae) and Hesperophylax sp. of [he caddisfly order (Trichoptera).
• While some of the other mac roinvertebrates sampled can occur in flowing water
(lotic environments) they are not dependent on it and can tolerate reduced flow
for all or part of their aquatic stages. They are also found in lentic habitats
without flow. Many of the specimens sampled clearly are indicative of still
water (lentic environments) and are uncommon in lotic conditions except in slack
water areas. These results are commensurate with the kind of drainages involved,
i.e. intermittent upland drainages.
The representatives of the blackfly family (Simulium sp.) were only obtained in
No-Name Gulch while the members of the caddisfly order (Trichoptera), Hesperophy-
lax sp., were found only in Flume Gulch. Therefore only one (1) representative
of an obligate rheophile species was sampled from each drainage.
Specific drainage features, habitat types sampled and a full interpretation of
the taxonomic results are discussed in Appendix J, Aquatic communities.
!I
i.
2-578
