Doc Date:12H1/2001 III III III IIIIIII III
sss
s~~~
2.9 ARCHAEOLOGICAL CULTURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCES _ .. ~ ~ `~ 1 °/;tai/sr/
Section 4.1 discusses control of impacts to resources described in this section.
The Archeological resources of the Northwestern Colorado region are believed to
represent a vide array of cultures spanning at least 13,000 years and including
several cultures, some of which are known to exist and others that are only sus-
peeled. These cultures include the Clovis, Folsom, Plano, Desert Archaic, Fre-
mont, and recent historic cultures such as the Ute Indians. A specific chrono-
logy of cultures for the region has not been formulated, however, the following
has been suggested as a probable sequence of occupation by early man.
Published evidence of sites in the area which represent the Clovis or Folsom cul-
. lures have not been made to date. Several unconfirmed reports are found of Clo-
vie and Folsom point finds by local collectors in northwest Colorado.
The next chronological culture, the Plano, extended from 8,000 to 5,000 B.C. The
only documented evidence of this prehistoric culture was found in Dinosaur
National Monument, approximately 80 miles west of the Craig area (Breternitz,
1963).
Reported sites documenting the Desert Archaic Culture have been located in the
Dinosaur National Monument and on the Uncompaghre Plateau. No sites, however,
have been found in the area surrounding the proposed mine plan area.
The Fremont Culture, primarily based upon agricultural activities, lasted for
approximately 350 years 0800-1150 A.D.). Several archeological sites have been
recorded in western Moffat County that represent [his culture. Since the abun-
dance of cultural remains is inversely proportional to their age, the sites
representing this culture are more numerous than those mentioned previously.
Rock art, rock shelters, and masonry granaries are remains that are representa-
tive of this time period.
l~
2-587 ~gp 2 }gat
..r __ -_ ~- ~ ~ ~-
