STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
MEMO
Date: November 23, 2010
To: DRMS Coal Staff
From: Tom Kaldenbach 114,
Re: Reclamation Award Nomination Package for West Elk Mine
COLORADO
D IV IS I ON Of
RECLAMATION
MINING
SAFETY
The West Elk Mine has submitted the attached nomination package for an award for its
reclamation of a pre-law coal mine site. The reclamation was done as part of the excavation for a
new pond at the West Elk Mine.
The project involved excavating approximately 140 cubic yards of trash and debris from the site
and hauling it to a landfill. They also excavated about 4,000 cubic yards of coal and coal refuse
and placed it in West Elk's coal refuse pile.
The reclamation reduces the potential for contamination of alluvial ground water at the pre-law
site. The operator's reclamation of the pre-law site went well beyond the normal effort necessary
when constructing a pond. The work is commendable and warrants special recognition.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
