Public Notice
McClave Canyon Mining, LLC, P.O. Box 98, Loma, CO, 81524, has submitted a
complete application for a permit revision to the Division of Reclamation, Mining and
Safety for its McClave Canyon Mine, mining permit No. C- 1980 -004. The proposed
revision will provide for new coal cleaning facilities, a new coal mine waste pile,
sediment pond and a topsoil and construction material stockpiles south of the facilities.
McClave Canyon mine currently trucks about 280,000 tons of coal per year to the
Cameo Power plant located off 1 -70 at Exit 46. The Cameo Power plant is scheduled to
close at the end of 2010. Since the Cameo Power plant is the Mine's only customer, the
Mine will also close temporarily at the end of 2010. In order to continue the operations,
McClave Canyon Mining intends to increase production to 500,000 clean tons per year
and build a cleaning plant and associated facilities. The clean coal will then be loaded
into trucks and hauled to the Fruita Loadout.
The new coal cleaning plant will be located in the canyon above the offices and below
the mine portal. McClave Creek is an ephemeral channel that forms the canyon.
McClave Creek will be placed in a 660 foot long 42" diameter culvert to develop
necessary room for the facilities and stockpiles. Earth moving operations will shape the
site to accommodate a crushing and screening facility, air jig plant, product and coal
mine waste stockpiles and various conveyors.
The McClave Canyon Mine is located approximately 19 miles north of Loma, CO along
State Highway 139. East Salt Creek is immediately west of the permit boundary. The
permit area is encompassed within the following lands:
Township 7 South, Range 102 West, 6 P.M.
Section 3:
Portions of lot 14
Section 14:
SW /4NW /4
Section 15:
All
Section 16:
E/2
Section 21:
E /2, E /2W /2, SW4NW /4, NW /4SW /4
Section 22:
All
Section 23:
W /2NW /4, Lots 1, 2, 3, 4
Section 26:
NW /4NW /4
Section 27:
All
Section 28:
NW /4NE /4, NE /4NW /4
Section 34:
N/2
Containing 3562 acres, more or less.
The location of these sections is contained within the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute
Howard Canyon and Garvey Canyon Quadrangle maps.
