Appendix B - Packer Test Methods and Results 2
pressure. For most applications, the maximum applied additional pressure was less than about 700
kPa (100 psi).
4. Positive-displacement pump. Fluid injection to the formation was achieved using a positive-
displacement pump. Suitable pumps are reservoir-type high-pressure hand pumps, with a small
volume delivery (5-10 cc) per stroke.
5. Flow meter. An in-line flow meter capable of measuring flow rates from 0.125 to 20 gpm.
This arrangement allows testing of all low to moderate permeability systems. The range of hydraulic
conductivities which this system can practically test is in the range of 10-9 cm/s (0.001 ft/yr) to 10-6 cm/s (1
ft/yr) using only the positive displacement pump or up to 10-3 cm/sec using the flow meter and pressurized
water supply.
GROUNDWATER FLOW OUT ` MINE WATER SUPPLY IN
0.25" HIGH-PRESSURE HOSE
FLOW METER
VALVE RESERVOIR
HIGH-PRESSURE HAND PUMP
0.25" HIGH-PRESSURE HOSE
COMPRESSED N2
BALL VALVE
• U I PRESSURE GAUGE
COLLAR OF TEST HOLE
PROTECTIVE COLLAR
TOP PACKER; SLIDING HEAD TYPE
0o 1/2" NPT PERFORATED PIPE
0
36 - 1/8" PERFORATIONS
(EQUALLY SPACED)
0
o LOWER PACKER INFLATION LINE
BOTTOM PACKER; SLIDING HEAD TYPE
GLAND PROTECTIVE COLLAR
CAP
Figure 1.
