Dear Ms. Brown:
I am writing in support of PR06 which will allow continued operations at the New Horizon Mine in
Nucla, Colorado. My husband and I brought our family back to Colorado in 1996. At that time, we held
property that was adjacent to the mine. The Konschak's, my husband's parents, also occupied property
that bordered the mine. We have found the mine personnel, many of whom are our friends, to be a
dedicated caring group of people. The mine was always a good neighbor, sending a water truck and
releasing members of the crew (many of whom are on the volunteer fire department) to help when a
brush fire threatened my father -in -law's property. It has been our personal observation that the mine
has always reclaimed lands to a status that was equal to or greater than the condition in which
operations began. The mine always maintained contact with us and monitored the condition of our
cistern during blasting operations. Additionally the mine has always shown due diligence when
providing us with proper notice and paperwork in regards to all of their permit applications that might
affect us as their neighbor.
During our 15 year tenure in the community, we have had the opportunity to serve with or observe
Lance Wade and other employees as they have provided service to our community. New Horizon Mine
and the employees of the mine are an invaluable economic resource to this community and the loss of
those jobs would have serious repercussions that would ripple throughout our area. While the loss of
these jobs will be very costly to the employees themselves, the loss of their buying power and tax
contributions will impact the entire community. Currently our community is struggling under the weight
of an unemployment rate that is almost double that of the nation, and there are few prospects looming
in our future. Every job in this community is precious and detrimental to our survival.
It is my sincere hope, that you will weigh the adverse impacts to our community, and these employees
when making your decision on PR06. I urge you to support the continuation of the New Horizon Mine
and coal mining in our state and community.
Sincerely,
Betty J. Stephens
