3. The section titled Ground and Surface Water Monitoring does not provide enough
information about the proposed ground water monitoring program. Please provide all required
information described in Rule 3.1.7(7)(b) regarding the proposed groundwater monitoring
program.
Response : Our request for additional water monitoring wells will expand our existing
monitoring program. The program is focused on the Mahogany zone at and around the location
of the commercial mine site. Its objectives are the early detection of any impacts to either the
ground water levels or to ground and surface water quality. Currently, water levels are measured
monthly in the WW-11, TH-A6, MW-12 and EF-0 1 wells; this practice will be extended to the
four new monitoring wells. Chemical analysis will be performed on all wells on a monthly basis.
Surface water samples are taken and flow rates are estimated monthly at two locations : 1) the
outflow of water from the mine entrance, and 2) the most downstream point on the Colony
property of the East Middle Fork of Parachute Creek. Sampling of the East Middle Fork of the
Parachute Creek is subject to stream flow. There is generally no stream flow leaving the Colony
property. This monitoring program has detected no change in ground and surface water quality.
The following specifically addresses the requirements of Rule 3.1.7(7)(b) :
(b) If groundwater monitoring is required, the Operator shall include the following information
as part of a permit application, NOI, or permit or NOI modification: (NOI's for all monitoring
wells were sent to DRMS on October 15, 2010.)
(i) a map that accurately locates all proposed groundwater sample points and any locations that
are proposed as a point of compliance; (Included with TR-13 submittal as Attachment B.
NOTE : Revised location for alluvial monitoring well location. This new location, along with
the three (3) B-Groove locations, were visited by DRMS on 10/22/10. Attached is a new survey
plat for the revised alluvial well location.)
(ii) the method of monitoring well completion where monitoring wells are required;
Response : See Attachment B submitted with TR 13 for wellbore sketch & completion
information.
(iii) method of sampling, frequency of sampling and reporting to the Office;
Response : The method of sampling encompasses both surface and ground water sampling sites.
Groundwater locations are currently four monitoring wells sampled monthly. The wells are
WW-11 (up gradient), WW-EF-01 (below the mine bench), TH-A6 (Middle Fork at shop) and
MW-12 (located on Middle Fork at Settling Pond 4). The first three wells have dedicated pumps
and MW-12 is sampled using a portable Redi Flow II pump. Surface water locations are SW-
MD-1 (the mine discharge water) and SW-EF-01 (located on East Middle Fork).
