" Lam,,,.
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO 87109-3435:
RE: Climax Mine Arkansas Channel Restoration Project :-C -_ __,;
Dear Ms. Humphries:
We are providing the enclosed summary of the "Design for the Relocation and Restoration of the
East Fork Arkansas River" to inform on the progress of this important project taking place at the
Climax Molybdenum Mine in Climax, Colorado. This project was initiated in compliance with
the U.S. COE Section 404 Permit No. CO-OYT-0211 effective 28 July 1980 and closed 26 June
1985 which authorized Climax to "divert, relocate, and contain" this section of the River. The
project was awarded as a design-build project to the Habitat Team, managed by Habitat
Management, Inc. The finalized design, construction and revegetation plan was approved by
Climax in March 2007. The enclosed summary is provided to notify your agency about the
general scope, design methods used for this project and the projected schedule.
The implementation of this finalized plan will begin as soon as the site becomes accessible in the
spring of 2007. We anticipate the project start date will be between May 1st and 15th, 2007. We
anticipate the completion of channel construction and habitat installation, including the
application of soil amendments, seeding and transplanting of on-site vegetation to the project area
during 2007. The channel and revegetation will be managed during 2008 with full-flow regimes
introduced into the restored channel in spring 2009.
If requested, a final project review meeting can be scheduled in mid April with Climax staff and
the interested regulatory agencies. As an agency with an interest in this project, Climax wishes to
inform you of the plans and designs it is utilizing to meet the requirements of our COE 404
permit and our commitment to making this a showcase project with a final product that is
innovative, creative, visually pleasing, naturally stable, and in harmony with the surrounding
undisturbed environment. While your agency's formal review and input is not requisite, Climax
is very interested in addressing any questions that you might have. A complete copy of the
Habitat Team report containing the baseline studies, designs and construction plans are available
at the Climax Mine. Should you have other questions or concerns not addressed in this summary
please contact me at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Gary Slifka
Senior Environmental Engineer
Climax Mine
Enclosures
lc: Mr. Greg Policky (DOW), Mr. Allen Sorenson (CDRMS)
