<br />Peabody <br />4 <br />to <br />October 25, 2010 <br />Vern Pfannenstiel---Jim Pendleton Award Nomination 2010 <br />Vern Pfannenstiel is employed as Manager, Environmental Services - West for Peabody <br />Energy. He is responsible for providing environmental, reclamation, permitting and <br />regulatory support to Peabody's western operations including Montana, Wyoming, <br />Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. He has recently completed reclamation operations <br />in Mongolia (first in the history of the country) and provides environmental and <br />reclamation support to Peabody's Australian operations. He has worked for Peabody for <br />30 years mostly as an environmental scientist, with all of that time spent at Peabody's <br />western operations or division offices concentrating on environmental studies, permitting, <br />and reclamation. His particular interests are in semi-arid land revegetation, restoring land <br />use, and implementing grazing management programs on reclaimed lands. His <br />contributions to these efforts have helped gained national and international recognition <br />for reclamation at Peabody in all of its western operations and in particular in Colorado. <br />He has served as president of the American Society of Mining and Reclamation and a <br />number of professional organizations and technical committees. He received his B.S. in <br />Range Ecology with a concentration in mined land reclamation from Colorado State <br />University in 1978. He is currently stationed at Peabody's Southwest Operations office <br />in Flagstaff, Arizona. <br />Many of you know Vern from his extensive work at the Seneca II, Yoast, and Seneca II- <br />W mines in Northwestern Colorado. Vern was instrumental in developing the <br />reclamation plan at all three of these sites and the former Nucla Mine in Southwestern <br />Colorado. Vein's knowledge and continued dedication has led to outstanding native <br />plant and wildlife community establishment in the and climate of Western Colorado. <br />Through study and perseverance, Vern has pioneered seed collection, native shrub <br />planting, grazing, land management and success evaluation techniques implemented <br />throughout the United States and foreign lands. <br />As a scientist and a pioneer in the field of mined land reclamation, I believe Vern <br />Pfannenstiel exemplifies the qualities for the Jim Pendleton award for 2010. <br />I respectfully nominate Vern Pfannenstiel for the Jim Pendleton award for 2010. <br />
