PERMIT #: M-1977-493
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE: October 19, 2010
OBSERVATIONS
This was a pre-operational inspection for the Climax molybdenum mine, a 112d -3 hard rock mine operated by
the Climax Molybdenum Company - a division of Freeport McMoRan. DRMS representatives for this
inspection were Tony Waldron, Allen Sorensen and Eric Scott of DRMS. DRMS was guided / accompanied on
the inspection by Climax representatives Brian McGill and Bryce Romig.
DRMS conducted this :inspection as a pre-op inspection for AM06 which was submitted to DRMS in its current
form on August 10, 2010. AM06 proposes adding an additional 3269 acres to the affected area of the site, and
also attempts to consolidate prior modifications to the permit and update existing information and practices at
the site where necessary. DRMS attempted to get an overview of current and proposed site operations during
this inspection in order to assist in the adequacy review for the amendment. To this end, the inspection included
an overview of the "camp" area, the open pit, ongoing and completed reclamation activities, water collection
and treatment facilities, new construction activities, and the removal of tailings and sludge from Robinson Lake
as approved in TR15 and TR16.
There is a significant amount of construction activity on-site associated with generally updating the operation,
constructing the new mill and other supporting facilities, and bringing the mine back into production at some
future time, but no mining/milling is currently taking place. Reclamation of the Robinson tailings area, as well
as several other areas of the site, and ongoing collection and treatment of impacted water from the site is also
continuously occurring.
No issues requiring corrective actions were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Brian McGill,
Climax Molybdenum Company, Climax Mine
Highway 91, Fremont Pass
Climax, CO 80429
