Musick, Jason
From: Kaldenbach, Tom
Sent: Friday, October 22, 2010 12:04 PM
To: Musick, Jason
Cc: Hernandez, Daniel
Subject: Peabody Sage Creek Mine (Permit C-2009-087), MR-1,,DRMS Hydrology Review
Jason,
The information provided in the MR-1 submittal supports a decision to approve the MR. I have no adequacy comments
for the operator.
The location of COV11 is appropriate for providing baseline monitoring in the downdip, northwestern part of the permit
area. Monitoring at the COV11 location, in conjunction with monitoring of existing wells located to the east, will enable
determination of the potentiometric surface in the Wadge Overburden. The proposal to monitor only the Wadge
Overburden in this area, and not monitor the Wadge Coal and Wadge Underburden, is appropriate based on Robson
and Stewart's (USGS Water-Resources Investigation Report 90-4020) that suggests the Overburden, Coal, and
Underburden function as a single hydrostratigraphic unit. The proposed sampling parameters and frequencies for well
COV11 are the same as those for other baseline monitoring and therefore are sufficient for providing baseline
information.
Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Phone (303) 866-3567, ext. 8128
