Once
mined, these sections will be sloped to the original grade using stockpiled overburden from
the site and will not disrupt mining operations. Soil stockpiles which will not be disturbed for
12 months will be seeded and stabilized. Final grading will be to no more than a 3:1 slope
and will follow the original topography as closely as possible. Storm water will not be retained
onsite for more than 72 hours.
All stockpiled overburden and topsoil will be used exclusively for reclamation. Topsoil will be
spread uniformly over the disturbed area to an approximate packed depth of 4-6 inches as
existed prior to mining activities. In the event that existing soils have insufficient depth,
topsoil shall be brought in and spread over the deficient areas. The pit will be seeded during
the last year of operation. The total area to be seeded will include all disturbed areas. The
seedbed will be well settled and firm, but not friable, for seed placement. Soils that have
been compacted by equipment will be tilled to break up rooting restrictive layers, then
harrowed, rolled or packed to prepare the required firm seedbed.
The mined and sloped areas will be seeded using a seed drill in late fall to early spring. A
premium mixture of introduced cool-season grasses for the Great Plains State and
Intermountain Region will be used. Majority of the mixture is made up of drought-tolerant,
sod-forming grasses. This mixture is excellent for weed control and soil stabilization in
erosion areas. The seed mix will be distributed at 20-25 pounds per acre. This mix
includes 20% Slender Wheatgrass, 20% Pubescent Wheatgrass, 20% Smooth Brome,
15% Intermediate Wheatgrass, 10% Orchardgrass and 15% Perennial Ryegrass.
Expected germination rate is 85 - 90%. No fertilizing or watering will occur. No trees or
shrubs exist in the affected area. No trees or shrubs will be placed in the area after mining.
Logan County does not anticipate the use of organic soil amendments or mulching to retain
moisture.
No structures, roadways or water features will remain after reclamation.
The original land use is rangeland. The affected area will be returned to rangeland use
after mining is completed. The affected area is zoned AG Agriculture. Rangeland is an
allowable and appropriate land use in this zone. The Pre and Post-mining land use as
rangeland meets the criteria of the Logan County Master Plan. Surrounding land is zoned
AG Agriculture and is primarily used as rangeland. After reclamation there will be no
detrimental hydrologic effects and no off-site drainage.
