Office Phone
970-522-7879
Jim Neblett, Director
Planning & Zoning
Planning & Zoning
LOGAN COUNTY
FAX 970-522-4018
Web: www.logancountyco.gov
315 MAIN STREET SUITE 2
STERLING, COLORADO 80751
EXHIBIT D
Mining Plan
The Kues Gravel Pit will be operated as an open gravel pit and mined from west to east
using a front-end loader in 3-5 acre sections. Mining of the gravel is ongoing in the existing
pit area and is scheduled to commence on approximately November 1, 2010 in the
expansion area and end approximately November 1, 2020. The pit will be mined as needed
to provide materials for use as road beds for county roads. Primary commodities to be
mined/extracted are sand and gravel. No secondary commodities will be mined/extracted.
No incidental products will be mined/extracted. No refuse, acid or toxic-producing materials
will be exposed.
The thickness of the deposit ranges from 8 to 14 feet. Average thickness is 10 feet. As
mining in the pit progresses, the topsoil will be stockpiled. Topsoil depth is approximately 4
inches. The topsoil will be stripped and stockpiled from the active mining area. Sloping of
this stockpile will be no steeper than 3:1. Once mined, these sections will be sloped to the
original grade using stockpiled overburden from the site and will not disrupt mining
operations. Soil stockpiles, which will not be disturbed for 12 months, will be seeded with a
suitable cover crop to minimize weed production and wind erosion. The overburden will be
separately stockpiled in the above manner.
An access road, approximately 20 feet wide, has been constructed to facilitate ingress and
egress to the pit area. It may need periodic grading to accommodate heavy truck traffic.
There will be a buffer between the mined areas and the existing fence. There will be no
structures erected. The gravel will be loaded directly onto County trucks for use on county
roads.
There will be no water diversions or impoundments onsite. There will be no washing or
processing of materials onsite. The pit will not intercept any groundwater. Ponding of water
may occur after a significant rain but will not remain long, due to the absorption rate of the
soil. Interception of surface drainage will not occur. No detrimental effects on water quality
are anticipated. There is a dry creek bed that runs through the pit area. This creek bed only
runs on rare occasions in the event of a heavy downpour. The natural drainage of this creek
bed will not be disturbed. There will be no disturbance to hydrologic balance. Reclamation
will be consistent with the future land use of Rangeland. Explosives will NOT be used in the
mining or reclamation processes.
