OF
For Wildlife-
For People
p ,,-I ":D
CUB 2 JMi
Divmiori
1fArting
ufrs vet f
The Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) has reviewed the Climax Molybdenum Company request to
adjust the affected land boundary to encompass areas anticipated to be required for mine operations based
on current mine plans and to provide updated information based on the current and future status of
planning and engineering activities in the miningglan. This facility is located in the vicinity of Township
7S, Range 79W; and Township 8S, Range 79S, 6 Principle Meridian. CDOW appreciates the
opportunity to comment on this mining permit application and would like to provide the following
information.
It is our understanding that the proposed mining will utilize an open pit truck-shovel operation. Mining
activities will result in several process water ponds increasing in size and the enlargement of waste dump
piles. CDOW recommends that as areas of the mine site are disturbed that they be stabilized and
reclaimed as soon as possible. Clinton Creek below Clinton Reservoir is identified as aquatic designated
cutthroat trout habitat and any future amendments to the mining plan should consider potential impacts to
this stream. CDOW requests that the Exhibit H- Wildlife Information section concerning lynx use of the
property (pages H-16 to H-19) be updated to reflect the results of the White River National Forest 2010
lynx study.
The CDOW would like to provide the following recommendations to minimize wildlife impacts within
the proposed affected area. Any development in the Carbonate Hill area should be timed to avoid conflict
with lynx breeding and elk calving. This area is within lynx breeding habitat, and has been documented
to be used by lynx. It is also an important area for elk calving and acts as a refuge for elk in the spring
and early summer. CDOW recommends that mining activities in the Carbonate Hill area be restricted
from April 15th through June 30th to minimize impacts to lynx and elk. CDOW also requests that vehicle
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Mike King, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Tim Glenn, Chair • Robert Streeter, Vice Chair • Mark Smith, Secretary
Members, David R.
