Review of BInsting Opee??tioos of summit Briiich
ANALYSES of BLASTING IMPACTS,, 2.2 cent'
Using this formula at the Fox Mine, the overpressure at the nearest structure (the
Yianratty house) at a distance (D) of 500 feet with an 80-pound 'charge per delay (W),
would be around 0.009339 psi. In decibel scale, this air overpressure is 110 dB. The
intensity of this overpressure is many times less than the 0.0 129psi overpressure at the
133-dB limit allowed by the Colorado regulations. On quiet days, people may hear blasts
with overpressure at this level. However, damage to structures is impossible at this level.
3.0 GENERAL BLASTING CONCERNS OF PROJECT NEIGHBORS:
Some neighbors of the various Summit Brick Mines have expressed a desire for more
information regarding the monitoring of explosive transportation and use activities. The
purpose of this section is to provide general information about modem blasting methods,
transportation systems and regulations applying to their use.
All blasting work proposed for the various mines of Summit Bride Co. will be performed
by either L.W. Weir Transfer, Inc., or Lonnie Loader Construction, both of whom are
very experienced contract blasting companies. It the usual practice to utilize a contract
powder company to manage all explosive transportation and storage activities. Explosive
transport vehicles will satisfy all the stringent vehicle standards as required by Federal
Department of Transportation (DOTS After blasting, unused explosives are secured in
approved explosive magazines. Once explosives enter any Summit Brick Mine site, their
transportation and use is regulated by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration
(MSHA) and by the Colorado Department of Labor. Only a fully licensed and qualified
blaster examination will control all blasts. Additionally the blaster will meet the
experience requirements set forth by the Colorado Department of Labor. Ucensed
blasters and contractors are required to be knowledgeable about and to comply with all
regulations governing explosives and blasting. When a regulation from one agency is
more stringent than that of another, the more stringent of the two regulations will apply.
23
