September 20,2010 C-1 994-082/Yoast Mine DTM
houndstongue are widespread, present as both dispersed stands and dense patches, most prevalent along roadsides,
sediment ponds, channel and gully repair areas, stockpile sites, and similar locations subject to on-going or
repeated disturbance, but present in other areas as well. Noxious weed patches were noted in the following
locations in the two most recent complete inspections(June and September 2010),though the listing here is not
intended as a full accounting of weed infestations
June 2010 Weed Observations
-Canada thistle Pond 13 vicinity and reclaimed slope NE of Pond 13; South facing slopes vicinity of Ponds 13 and
14; slopes in vicinity of YPM-6-3; Topsoil Stockpile"I", drainage below Pond 11A, Channels and Gully repair
areas in the PM-13 watershed; various locations along mine entrance road; perimeter of"quakie patch"on the
Patrick property,upper YPM-1-1 drainage.
-Whitetop noted in various locations along including Pond 10 area and locations along Armand Draw, and on
Topsoil Stockpile"I".
-Dalmation toadflax on Pond 11 embankment.
September 2010 Weed Observations
-Canada thistle vicinity of"quakie patch"on Patrick property; bull thistle and Canada thistle scattered along the
two track road that runs along south perimeter of reclamation in upper YPM-1-1 watershed.
-High densities of multiple age classes of Canada thistle in the Pond 11A watershed, particularly along PM-13 and
tributary drainages; some sprayed many apparently not. Quite a bit of houndstongue here as well. Canada thistle
on south facing slopes in lower Pond 12 watershed, east of the slide repair area.
-Dalmation toadflax on lower slope area immediately north of Pond 11.
Current Revegetation Projects
-A temporary perimeter scraper road had been established around the site of the final planned tree and shrub
planting site at Yoast; a riparian planting site along the west side of Armand Draw, north of the lower end of YPM-
16. SCC plans to transport additional topsoil from Stockpile"I", for distribution on the site(the purpose of the
perimeter scraper road). A large number of 1 gal. size planting stock, including boxelder, willow, chokecherry,
serviceberry, and currant had been delivered to the site, in preparation for planting. Work to be completed at the
site includes topsoil placement,planting/weed fabric installation, seeding with the riparian seedmix, and fence
construction. Given the presence of weedy species on portions of Stockpile"I", including Canada thistle and
whitetop, it is likely that weed control will be necessary at the planting site beginning in 2011. It is recommended
that SCC scrape off the surface layer of soil from the stockpile prior to loading scrapers for hauling soil to the
planting site,to minimize the weedy seedbank component.
-There is an area of a couple acres at the head of the YPM-19 watershed, just down-slope from LU-313,
which was initially revegetated several years ago,but which exhibits poor vegetative cover and fairly
extensive rill erosion. The area has been noted as a problem in the past and needs to be reseeded this fall.
-In the general vicinity of the Pond 12 slide project area, a several acre area of graded spoil located on slopes to
the south and west of YPM-6-3,between Pond 12A and Pond 12,was topsoiled this year. The topsoiled area will
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 7 of 13
