April 26, 2002
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80202
To whom it may concern:
RECEIVED
APR 2 9 2002
lsmn Of Minerals and Geology
t ..
e
I am a resident of Pueblo County and am writing to comment on the Reclamation
Permit application submitted by the Rio Grande Portland Cement Company.
I request that a public hearing be held in Pueblo in the evening so that any
people who wish will be able to attend. I also request an extension of comment
period to one hundred twenty (120) days.
This is a complex permit, and I want to consult with experts, concerning details
outlined by this permit.
As an asthmatic, I am very adversely affected by blowing dust, and two factors
have come to my attention, concerning this permit: 1) it does not provide for
sufficient restoration of the land for post mining use and 2) there is not sufficient
water availability so that dust will blow from the site.
When I moved to Pueblo in 1964, a number of streets in the city were unpaved,
and over a period of years we worked very hard to have all streets paved in order
to cut down on what was termed "runaway" dust. We have a number of very
windy days here in Pueblo, and we already have air pollution from the steel mill,
even though it may meet EPA standards. I am concerned about the additional
dust and particulates that will be in the air if the cement plant is developed in
Pueblo County.
Sincerely, r
U
Mary Beth Jensen
84 Amherst Avenue
Pueblo, CO 81005
