Proposed Limestone Quarry Access Road and Overview Cultural Resources Inventory
ABSTRACT/MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
An intensive pedestrian cultural resources inventory was performed for a proposed access road
' approximately 5 miles south of Pueblo in unincorporated Pueblo County, Colorado. The legal
location of the survey area is the Sections 1, 12, and 13, T22S, R65W. Work included a file
search, an intensive pedestrian survey covering approximately 42 acres, a reconnaissance
survey and overview survey of a proposed limestone quarry area, and the development of a
model for prehistoric site location and recommendations for this area. New segments of three
previously recorded cultural resources were found within the proposed quarry area and crossed
by the proposed access road. These are the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (5PE1776.8), the
' Colorado and Southern Railroad (5PE4162.2), and the Donnelly Floodwater Ditch (5PE1915.2).
Two new cultural resources were located during the intensive survey of the proposed access
' road. These are a segment of the Edson Ditch (4PE4191.1) and the Montoya Homestead
(5PE4192).

Both of the previously recorded railroads have been officially determined eligible for the National
' Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Donnelly Floodwater Ditch has been officially
determined not eligible. It is recommended herein that these same evaluations should apply to
' the segments of these resources contained within the proposed project area. It is also
recommended that the Colorado State Historic Preservation Officer be consulted concerning
' any impacts to the railroads. The two newly recorded sites are recommend to be not eligible for
the National Register of Historic Places and no further work should be required at these
locations.
1

UIRS
