Proposed Limestone Quarry Access Road and Overview Cultural Resources Inventory <br />(D&RGW 1933), while a 1940 map shows Lime and St. Charles (D&RGW 1940). A 1961 map <br />' refers to the location as the Sonora Spur (D&RGW 1961) <br />In May 1901, floodwaters of the St. Charles River washed the D&RG No. 115 off the tracks. At <br />' that time, the trestle crossed the river about 500 yards north of the San Carlos station. The <br />engine and baggage car made it across, but the passenger cars were washed away. <br />Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. <br />' In 1911, the D&RG and the C&S constructed adjacent lines between Southern Junction (the first <br />station on the new alignment south of Pueblo) and Walsenburg and operated this section as <br />' paired double track. This new route was more direct and was about 5.5 miles shorter than the <br />original line, sections of which continued to be used until 1936. -An interior section on the <br />original main line between Sonora and Graneros (about midway to Chucharas Junction) was <br />abandoned in 1917. The remaining sections became branches including the Sonora Branch, <br />' which connected to the new main line at Sonora Junction south of Minnequa. This 4.7-mile <br />branch was abandoned in 1924 and the track was removed the following year (Wilkins 1974). <br />In 1922, the DR&G was renamed after a change in ownership in 1921 to the Denver and Rio <br />Grande Western (D&RGW) Railroad (Wilkins 1974). The D&RGW merged with the Union <br />Pacific on June 30, 1997 (Strack n.d.). <br />¦ The previously recorded segments of the D&RG Railroad have been determined eligible by the <br />Colorado SHPO. This segment is of similar quality and character, and the bridge over the St. <br />Charles River appears to represent a type of construction that enhances the significance of this <br />segment. The abandoned segment of grade from the original single-track alignment also <br />contributes to the significance of this segment. It is recommended that Site 5PE1776.8 be <br />' considered eligible for the NRHP and the Colorado SHPO be consulted prior to any impacts to <br />it. <br />5LN1915.2 Donnelly Floodwater Ditch <br />This site consists of the remnants of a siphon and the Donnelly Floodwater Ditch. This segment <br />includes the portions of the ditch located within the proposed quarry area and crossed by the <br />proposed access road. The ditch is about 20 ft wide at the top, 4 ft wide at the bottom, and 10 ft <br />deep. In two places, the ditch has been graded through to facilitate a two-track crossing. One <br />of these locations is within the 200-ft wide survey corridor for the access road. Two concrete <br />abutments for a siphon across an arroyo to the west of the proposed access road were <br />recorded. These were made from stacked limestone and poured-in-place concrete. They are <br />about 20 ft wide„ 15 ft long, and 10 ft high. They are in fair condition. The ditch extends to the <br />' west under the railroads by way of a concrete box culvert that has been buried on the east side <br />and ends just after the railroad crossing outside the proposed quarry area but within the larger <br />lease area. The ditch continues to the east and south for several miles to eventually terminate <br />at the Huerfano River. Individual segments of the ditch are maintained by the adjacent <br />landowners and the portion within the project area appears to be abandoned. <br />No water rights are known to be associated with this ditch but a segment of. it in Section 7, <br />T22S, R64W, is listed in the Structures Listing at the Division of Water Resources as the <br />Donnelly Floodwater Ditch and Reservoir with a date of October 29, 1910. A portion of the land <br />just to the east of the project area in Section 8 was settled by Thomas D. Donnelly under a <br />' Desert Land Act patent issued October 22, 1919. <br />*7'?C 8 <br />i 17
