(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1982-086
INSPECTION DATE: 20 Sept 2010 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: DR?
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine inspection conducted by David Bird of DRMS. Bob Stewart of Alpine Rock Company
accompanied on the inspection. The site is located just south of the town of Fairplay alongside the Middle Fork
South Platte River. The operator mines historical dredge tailings and processes them for construction material,
although production has been sporadic and intermittent in recent years. The total permit area is 144 acres, and
the Division holds financial warranty in the amount of $120,080 for the operation. DRMS records show the post-
mining land use as wildlife habitat.
Annual reports together with visual observations on the ground indicate that there has been little change in the site
since the last inspection in 2005. Processing, when it occurs, is done using portable crushers and other
equipment brought in on an as-needed basis. The mining plan is unchanged from that filed with the original
application in 1982, and consists of mining the dredge tails down to the level of the natural ground surface. There
is no mining of native material, so there is no interception of ground water by mining.
The reclamation plan calls for reshaping 10 acres and reseeding 34 acres upon closure. The area to be reseeded
will consist of areas disturbed by the crushing and support areas. There was no topsoil available for salvage at the
site, and the reclamation plan does not stipulate importation of topsoil.
Although the site sees only intermittent activity, there is sufficient activity that the site does not fit the criteria for
temporary cessation.
The reclamation cost estimate was recalculated at $141,700. The new calculation applied the same general tasks
and criteria as the 2001 calculation with a couple of exceptions. The DEMOLITION task in the current calculation
is more comprehensive, the REVEGETATION task was reduced from 70 acres to 34, and a BULLDOZER RIPPING task
was added for the roads that will remain at closure. The cost estimate worksheets are attached to this inspection
report. The Financial Warranty deficiency is noted as a problem on page 3 of this report and will also be noticed
in a letter sent under separate cover
No other problems were observed.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Bob Stewart
OPERATOR: Alpine Rock Company
STREET: 14802 W. 44`h Ave
CITY/STATE/ZIP: Golden.
