May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112 (d) Permit Application
(d) Monitoring Systems
Tailings will be monitored during the mill optimization phase and an appropriate
sampling program will be developed prior to full production and submitted to Division.
A sump will be installed adjacent to the tailings' disposal location to evaluate leachate
generation, if any.
Surface water will be sampled on a quarterly basis as per Section 6.4.20(12).
Groundwater will be monitored from the discharge at the Idaho No. 1 adit as per Sections
6.4.20(12) and 6.4.20(19).
(e) Release Response Procedures
The following release response procedures will be followed:
• Spilled areas will be contained with socks;
• Absorbent mats will be used to absorb moisture;
• Any impacted soil will be removed within 24 hours and disposed off-site in an
approved facility within 14 days.
• (f) Containment Facilities Design Capacity
In accordance with the Storm Water Management Plan (Attachment T-4), chemicals will
be stored in either 55 gallon drums or in sacks. Chemicals stored within drums will be
placed into 70 gallon polyethylene secondary containments vessels.
6.4.20(8) Groundwater Information
(a) Map
Water information is presented in Figure C-6, Exhibit C.
(b) Known Aquifers and Related Subsurface Water Bearing Fracture Systems Within 2-
miles
The permit area is located at the northern boundary of the San Juan Hydrogeologic Basin
(Topper et. al., 2003). The Morrison Aquifer is the only hydrogeologic unit of the San
Juan Basin present within the permit area and is stratigraphically higher than the ore-
bearing zones. The May Day and Idaho mines are located within southward-dipping
sedimentary rocks cut by a series of east-west faults. The May Day-Idaho Fault System
are two eastward-trending reverse faults, each with a down throw to the south with
vertical displacement along the two faults of 350-475 feet.
The sedimentary units associated with the San Juan Basin are shown below with units
within the workings shaded (Sources: Eckel, 1949; Topper et. al., 2003):
May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112(d) Permit Application
September 21, 2010
7
