May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112 (d) Permit Application
calcite neutralizes any such acid. Additionally, there is the potential for aluminum above
Chronic Aquatic Life Standards and arsenic above drinking water standards to be
generated by leachate from the tailings.
The tailings are planned to be placed within the dry stope within the May Day No. I
portal. Based on observations by Dr. David Gonzales, Fort Lewis College (pers. comm.),
there is no water within this stope, limiting leachate generation. Additionally, the tailings
will be managed such that 75% of the process water will be recycled, again limiting the
amount of leachate that potentially can be generated.
As there is no leachate being generated, there is limited fate of the materials. This will
be further evaluated during the milling optimization phase.
References
Christensen, O. (2007) Technical Report, May Day - Idaho Mine. Prepared for Wildcat
Mining Corp.
(e) Measure to Prevent Unpermitted Discharges
The following measures will be undertaken for handling of the tailings to prevent
unpermitted discharges:
• Inspection of stope area once access is granted to perform a thorough
investigation of water characteristics and the conditions of materials already
within the stope;
• The maximum tailings moisture content will be limited to 25%
• During the milling optimization phase, three tailings samples from initial 5,000
yd3 tailings will be analyzed. The sample will be split. One split will be
submitted to a laboratory for analysis of Acid-Base Accounting and SPLP
analysis and one split will be archived.
• Following the interpretation of results during the milling optimization phase, a
sampling and monitoring program will be submitted to the Division for review.
6.4.20(15) Construction Schedule Information
(a) Designated Chemicals Facilities
No specific designated chemical facility will be constructed. Designated chemicals will
be stored in either a locked Conex or the locked mill.
The following modifications to the storage facilities will be completed prior to Milling
Optimization:
• Installation of berms around each of the storage facility to contain any spill; and
• Installation of a sump within the mill to collect any spill.
•
May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112(d) Permit Application
September 21, 2010
15
