This section reports the soil resources on the project site for determining the soil
types and characteristics, and also the suitability and amounts for use as plant growth media
( "topsoil ") during reclamation. Based on previous studies and 2010 field work, a baseline map
of the location of the soil types and an assessment of the physical and chemical characteristics
for reclamation and revegetation are presented.
1.0 General Description of Soil Resources
A Customs Soil Report was prepared for the general area using data available at the Natural
Resources Conservation Service (MRCS) website (Attachment I -1). Two soil surveys are
reported for the permit area:
• Animas- Dolores Area, Colorado, parts of Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata,
Montezuma, San Juan and San Miguel Counties (C0672);
• La Plata County Area, Colorado (C0669).
A combined map of both surveys was prepared (Figure I -1). In both surveys, the dominant soil
type was the Nordicol very stony sandy loam (Plate 1), 6 to 25 percent slopes with the following
characteristics applicable to reclamation at the site:
• Landform: Mountain slopes
• Parent material: Slope alluvium and colluviums derived from sandstone
• Drainage Class: Well drained
• Available water capacity: Low
• Maximum salinity: Nonsaline.
The typical profile for this soil is:
• 0 -1 ": slightly decomposed plant material;
• 1 -7: Very stony sandy loam
• 7 -20 ": Very stony loam;
• 20 -28 ": Very stony sandy loam;
• 28 -52 ": Very stony sandy clay loam;
• 52 -61 ": Extremely stony sandy loam.
May Day Idaho Mine Complex 112(d) Permit Application
September 21, 2010
"Strategically Positioned — Technically Prepared"
5555 DTC Parkway Suite A -4000, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111
Phone: (303)832 -7664, Fax: (303)832 -7469
