The application is for exploration
drilling of about 2,200 acres of federal coal that underlies BLM and USFS surface. The need for
the application is to allow Bowie to obtain additional information on coal resources adjacent to
the applicant's existing coal lease and, consequently, verify the quality and quantity of coal in
order to provide data on the potential coal reserves for future expansion of the Bowie #2 Mine.
BLM provided a public scoping and comment period from March 10 through April 11, 2010. On
March 12, 2010, ninety-eight letters requesting comments on the proposed action were mailed to
individuals, government agencies, and other organizations. A single comment letter was
received April 9, 2010.
C
