PERMIT #: M-1979-142
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: DMC
INSPECTION DATE: September 14, 2010
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) normal
monitoring program. Dennis Sanchez was present, representing the Operator, during the inspection. Photographs are
included at the end of this report to illustrate the conditions observed during the inspection.
The West of Maybell Pit is located approximately one mile southwest of Maybell and accessed from Highway 40.
Several problems noted in a September, 2006 inspection report remain unresolved for this site and have been noted again
as problems in this report. The Division still does not have a map adequately defining the affected area for this site.
During this inspection it was unclear to the inspector whether or not all of the disturbance falls within the approved permit
area. Additionally, some boundary markers were missing or incorrectly placed, making it impossible to determine where
the permit boundaries lie.
An area including approximately 9.39 acres has been reclaimed and was released by DRMS on September 2, 1998.
There are three distinct ridges, lying north of HWY 40, that have been affected by mining operations at this site. The
northern most ridge has been largely reclaimed and may be eligible for release once vegetation is adequately established.
The next ridge to the south remains unreclaimed and several stockpiles were located in this area during this inspection.
The southernmost ridge is also unreclaimed and additional mining will likely occur here. Again, a map clearly defining
the permit area must be submitted to DRMS in order to determine if all of the disturbed areas lie within the approved
permit acreage.
No other problems or violations were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Rex Goodrich
Colorado Division of Highways
222 South 6th St Rm 317
Grand Junction, CO
81501
Dennis Sanchez
Colorado Department of Transportation
260 Ranney Street
Craig, CO
81625
