A&x reading the Rion, the fol nft we
my obserwtiom and oonurneam intended to clarify what I believe are mniCSdCWS and
inacanacim.
Pages 5 dt 6:
It was stated that "irrigated haylaod and pastureland are very similar in composition in many
cases and may be used interchangeable dgmnding on the operatoes needs." This may be true for
some fields that are managed for grass or gmWalfilk hay. and then, also grexed by livestock at
various times of the year. But there are other instances, quite comma, when avp fields are
managed sobly a: bayland, particularly alfalfa bay. This latter condition usually ocam on the
better sods, and relies on a high level of managema by the operator.
This Revision Document rgxucdly uses the tasks «upland, hayland, and putturcland almost
interchangeably and thero£oro fob to mete the appropriate distinctions between these throe
agricultural lard use. But
for United States Department of Agricultural puaposes, it is mere specifically used for lard that
is managed imnesivdy with tillage and other cultural practices to produce commodities such as
vegetables, grains, hay, silage, etc. It a considaM distinct from pastureland in that periodic to-
seeding of a crop is usually necessary to sustain a high Tavel of p vdudk n..Occasionally, crop
atlexmeth or rrsAw may be grazed of the c wp is barvested.
Hayland: A tacm used to describe land that is used primarily to produce livestock forage that is
mechanically harvested and stored for later use It is considered cropW4 and a high level of
management (*dlizin& irrigating, pest control etc.), with periodic m-swdin& is usually
necessary to sustain production. As with other cropland, hayland may be graood at various tines
of the year depending on the forge grown and the needs of the producer. The common types of
bay grown in western Colorado include alfalfa, aifalfdgress mix, and grass (introduced andlor
native species).
TmMerin.
