DARVEY SERIES <br />LOCATION NM <br />Established Series <br />ev. CRL- RCP -RJA -ACT <br />11/97 <br />The Darvey series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in <br />alluvium from calcareous sandstone, shale and limestone. These soils are on hills, fan terraces, <br />and valley fill. Slope ranges from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 12 inches and <br />mean annual air temperature is about 55 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine - loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Ustic Haplocalcids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Danny loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) <br />--0 to 6 inches; dark brown (10YR 4/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and few very fine <br />roots; many fine interstitial pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth <br />boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick) <br />Bw1 - -6 to 20 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; strong medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and <br />fine roots; many fine tubular pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); gradual smooth boundary. <br />Bw2--20 to 31 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; <br />common fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear irregular <br />boundary. (Combined depth of Bw horizons is 7 to 30 inches) <br />Bk1 -31 to 38 inches; pink (7.5YR 7/4) loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; weak medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; common very fine roots; common fine <br />tubular pores; strongly effervescent; many calcium carbonate accumulations; moderately alkaline <br />(PH 8.2); gradual irregular boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick) <br />Bk2 - -38 to 60 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) loam, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; weak medium <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and plastic; strongly effervescent; many <br />calcium carbonate accumulations; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2). <br />TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln County, New Mexico; about 1.4 miles southeast of the old Owens <br />Ranch headquarters on dirt road; 20 feet south of road; in the northeast quarter, sec. 29, T. 5 S., R. <br />17 E. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Soil Moisture: Intermittently moist in the soil moisture control section from May through October <br />and December through February. The soil moisture control section is moist for longer periods of <br />time during the summer than the winter.Soil Temperature: 48 to 59 degrees F.
