biomass as oats at 75# per acre? Please provide validation for the Quickguard rate and revise
if warranted.
The green manure crop has been modified to only include oats at 75 Ibs PLS /acre. This
is due to the desires by the landowners for high seeding rates of oats for any harvest.
Quickguard has been removed from the green manure seed mix, since this seed mix will
not be applied in the fall.
Regarding the companion crop, oats and Quickguard are listed as options. In the first
paragraph of Subsection 5.3, narrative indicates Quickguard would only be applied in the
fall; whereas a footnote to Seedmix 7 later in the subsection indicates that the Quickguard or
oats would be used as a companion crop when alfalfa planting occurs in the fall, which
would seem to imply that if Seedmix 7 were seeded at some other time, alfalfa would be
seeded alone, with no cover crop. Based on the schedule presented in Subsection 5.7.1,
Seedmix 7 would only be seeded at one time of year ( "around August'), so it is not clear why
the seasonal options are included in Subsection 5.3. The seeding rate listed for oats as a
companion crop to alfalfa in Seedmix 7 is listed as 75 Ibs PLS per acre. This is incorrect; it
should be 20 Ibs/PLS per acre. Please clarify and revise the companion crop narrative,
seeding rates, and seedmix footnote as warranted. Unless optional timeframes for seeding of
Seedmix 7 are set forth in Subsection 5.7.1, with proper validation, the caveat regarding
seasonal limitations for the companion crop would seem to be moot, and should be
eliminated to avoid any confusion.
Seed Mix #7 in subsection contains a companion cover crop to be used with alfalfa
seeding depending on the time of the year that seeding takes place. The schedule for IC
seeding shown in subsection 5.7.1 includes both fall and spring seeding of Seed Mix #7.
According to NRCS, while oats can be very successful in the spring as a companion
crop, thev will not survive the winter, and therefore should not be used as a companion
crop with alfalfa if it is seeded in the fall. Triticale is an NRCS recommended winter
grain that will be included in Seed Mix #7 if it is applied in the fall. The seeding rate for
Triticale is based on NRCS recommendations.
Additionally, the landowners (Morgans) requested that oats be seeded at a rate of at
least 75 Ibs PLC /acre as a companion crop. However, NRCS does not recommend that
oats be seeded as a companion crop at a rate greater than 40 Ibs PLS /acre in order to
prevent unnecessary competition with alfalfa following spring seeding. Therefore, the
seeding rate for oats as companion crop in Seed Mix #7 has been set to 40 Ibs PLS /acre
in an effort to satisfy both the landowners and NRCS.
