5.1.1.6 Syntex
Description: Syntex is a frothing agent used in the milling process. Syntex is very similar to
common soap.
Location: Moly warehouse and the reagent storage area at the northeast end of the mill.
Spill Potential: Low.
Potential Volume Spilled: Because it is stored in drums, most likely the volume spilled would
be one or two drums.
Prevention and Control: By carefully moving and transporting drums with a lift truck, spills
can be avoided. Also, storage should be in low traffic areas.
Countermeasures: Spills of Syntex can be controlled by diking with sorbent booms or simply
scooping up the materials and replacing the spilled Syntex in a new drum.
Nearest Clean-up Equipment: Spill kits are located in mobile units driven by the
Environmental Coordinator, WET (Water-Equipment-Tailings) Crew Foreman, and the pond
technicians (2). Spill kits are also located at the east and west ends of the mill building.
Monitoring: The mill reagent storage area is checked on each shift and the moly warehouse is
checked daily.
Reporting: All spills of Syntex which threaten the waters of the State of Colorado are subject to
the requirements of Sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4 of this SPCC Plan. Spills of more than half a drum
should be written up on the "Spill Incident Report" form (Appendix 1) and given to the
Environmental Coordinator.
15
