("Cotter") staff spoke with you by phone on August 19, 2010 to notify
WQCD of the initial radium levels in excess of specified limits for the 50-gpm system in July 2010.
Cotter currently estimates that the discharge monitoring reports covering the period beginning on
August 19, 2010, when the larger 100-gpm system began pumping and treating alluvial groundwater from
all available sumps and wells (Sump-1, MW-9, and Sump-4), will show that the applicable radium
226+228 discharge limit of 5 pCi/L is being met.
As Cotter staff also mentioned during the August 19, 2010 call, the contract laboratory used minimum
detection limits in excess of specified discharge limits for several parameters, including Total
Recoverable thallium (MDL - 1 ug/L), Total Recoverable chromium (MDL - 50 ug/L), and Potentially
Dissolved silver (MDL - 1 ug/L). The laboratory also reported Total Radium-226 as 0.15 pCi/L and
Dissolved Radium-226 as 13 pCi/L for the discharge samples collected on July 7, 2010. Cotter
conservatively used the 13 pCi/L value to calculate the reported daily maximum and 30-day average.
Cotter has contacted the laboratory to discuss the foregoing.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 719-275-7413 (ext. 202).
Sincerely,
111 Hamrick
Vice President, Mill Operations
Cotter Corporation
Canon City Mill, P.O.
