2010 Edna Mine Vegetation Sampling Report
Introduction
Chevron Mining Inc. is in the process of addressing final bond release requirements for the
Edna Mine. Vegetation monitoring was conducted at the mine in 2005, 2006, and 2008 with all
of the monitored areas passing the required parameters. However, infestations of Canada
thistle (Cirsium arvense), houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale), whitetop (Cardaria draba)
and perennial pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium) were observed in the Moffat area of the mine.
Therefore, vegetation cover monitoring was conducted in the fall of 2010 in the Moffat area in
order to demonstrate a relative noxious weed cover of less than three percent. This report
presents the results of the monitoring and documents that the Moffat Area has a noxious weed
cover below three percent.
Sampling Methodology
Vegetation sampling was conducted in accordance with the Edna Mine Vegetation Final Bond
Release Monitoring Plan (dated April 8, 2005) approved by the Colorado Division of Mining,
Reclamation, and Safety (DRMS). A copy of this plan is available on file at the DRMS.
Vegetative cover was measured using 10 meter transects with 100 point intercepts per transect.
The value of each intercept equals 1% of the total cover. Sampling was conducted on August 4-
5, 2010 by Chris Keough and Lindsey Brandt of Habitat Management, Inc.
Results
Eighteen samples were collected to obtain statistical adequacy. Results of the sampling are
shown in Table 1. A map of transect locations, and example photographs are provided below.
Total cover of noxious weeds in the Moffat area was 0.7%. Relative cover of noxious weeds in
the Moffat area was 1.6%, which is below the maximum level allowed by the DRMS of 3%. No
statistical evaluation was completed since only a simple weed cover value is desired. A few
weed infestations persist in the lower Moffat area; however these areas do not reflect the
condition of the Moffat area as a whole. Photographs of typical vegetation found in the Moffat
area are included below.
Summary
Vegetation sampling data demonstrates that the relative cover of noxious weeds in the Moffat
area is less than 3%.
Habitat Management, Inc. 1 August 9, 2010
